Grand Knight Rich Chickillo has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 10 years, serving in the positions of Deputy Grand Knight and Chairman of the Golf Tournament. He is retired after 16 years as Vice President of Sales for Thomas Register and resides in Southport with his wife Cass.
With more than 1.8 million members, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, the community, families and young people. In 2007, the Knights of Columbus at all levels of the organization raised and distributed $150 million to charity and rendered nearly 75 million hours of volunteer service. In this same period Knights of Columbus / Sacred Heart Council contributed over $38,000 and provided 8000 hours of volunteer service to a wide range of programs, scholarships and projects. These include hours of assistance to the residents of Sacred Heart Villas, needy non-parishioners, Community in Schools Program and through Operation Lamb (Least among My Brethren) raising money for mentally handicapped children.

Brother Knights
As I prepare to take over the responsibilities of the Grand Knight, I am excited and challenged by this enormous opportunity. Our Past Grand Knights, Joe Kinzer, Dan Cundiff, Paul Robinson, Steve Bodinsky, John Long, Don Meyer, their Officers and Members have set a standard that will be hard to equal. Outstanding Growth in Membership, continued increase in Program Activities and nine (9) time Star Council Award, resulting in increased revenues and support to those in need. My goal, with your help is to continue on this path of growth in all areas and increase our support to those in need in Brunswick County. This will take a team effort
I would like all of us to take a few minutes to reflect on our roles as members of the Knights of Columbus. As you know, the Principles of the order are Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We express the Principles through our efforts in our Council Programs of Membership, Family, Church, Community, Council, Youth and through support of our Assembly.
Please take a few minutes to think about the following question and how your answers meet you’re personal and our Council objectives.
Why did I join the Knights?
Do I attend Meetings whenever possible?
Do I participate in Council Activities?
Do I help to foster the Principles of the Order?
Depending on your answers, you feel great pride in your efforts and accomplishments or realize there is more you could do to help support those in need. Now is the time!
The following are some statistics for the first 6 months of this year.
Total Knights 215
Meeting Attendance (at least 1 meeting) 129
Program Activities
Participated in at least one activity (excluding Meetings) 95
Participated in 2 or more activities 47
Participated in more than 3 activities 31
Participated in no activities 86
As we move forward into a new year, we can look back on many of our Councils outstanding accomplishments this past year:
Most significant is 1st time “State Deputy” Award, the “Star Council” Award, and most important, 2007/08 produced the most amount of revenues ($25,000) given to our local charities in Brunswick County. For the first time our council hosted a very successful 3rd Degree and received many additional awards for Church, Family, Community, Council and Youth Activities. Truly a year we can all look back on with great pride.
As we move forward into our 08-09 Calendar Year, our objective is to increase the various activities that support our Principles. More on this at our July Meeting. We believe another area of importance for the Knights is “Spirituality” of our Council Members. I have recently created a Bereavement and Spiritual Committee to develop a plan of action. Some areas under consideration are more involvement in “Right to Life’, establishment of a Knights Library, increased participation in Adoration, Speakers discussing Catholic Issues and additional awareness of Brothers sick or in need of help.
Please talk or write me with any suggestions, problems or concerns you have that may help us to be a better and more productive council.
Pope Benedict XVI has stated “We need men who keep their eyes fixed on God, learning from Him what True Humanity means. Brothers I ask each of you to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per month to a Knights Activity; 36 hours a year. If all our Brothers make this small commitment we will surpass all of our past efforts. I assure you that I will do everything in my power to lead us to another outstanding year, and for Council 12537 to continue as one of the top councils in NC.
Vivat Jesus
Rich Chickillo

Sacred Heart Earns Star Council Award
Monday, December 03 2007 @ 12:42 PM CST

Sacred Heart Council has earned the distinction of Star Council for 2006-2007 fraternal year. This award, given by Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, recognizes overall excellence in the areas of membership recruitment and retention, promotion of the fraternal insurance program and sponsorship of service-oriented activities. State Depauty John Gouldie presented the award to Past Grand Knight Dan Cundiff.
Supreme Director Carl A. Anderson wrote in a letter to PGK Cundiff, "Please accept my sincere congratualtions upon attaining this prestigious award. Your dedication to the order is seen in the high standard of excellence you have achieved."
Only 20 Councils out of 114 in North Carolina received this award. Sacred Heart Council is the only North Carolina Council to have reached Star Council status for eight consecutive years. This is a major achievement because the Council itself is only eight years old.
PGK Cundiff remarked in receiving the award, "The Star Council Award is quite an honor for us. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment.

Welcome to Sacred Heart Council Knights of Columbus Website
Friday, August 13 2004 @ 09:56 AM CDT
This History of Sacred Heart Council is still be written. We will add additional information to this site as it is prepared. Therefore, you should come back to visit this site from time to time.
Prior to 1985, the Knights of Columbus had no Council presence in all of Brunswick County. The closest council was St Mary’s, in Wilmington-which is New Hanover County. St Mary’s, I believe, was established right after WWI.
In the mid or late 1970’s, St Mary’s Grand Knight, John Organ, formed a sub-council in the Southport area. Membership was less than 10 but it never really grew and was dissolved after a year or two.
In 1985/86 a group of men in the area met and discussed the formation of a Knights of Columbus Council. Soon after that Our Lady of The Rosary Council #9039 was formed with 35 Charter members. Its Charter was dated 21 June 211985. Our Lady of the Rosary then became the first Knights of Columbus Council in Brunswick County.
The Charter Grand Knight was a fellow by the name of Roger W. (Red) Fuller and the Financial Secretary was John Angermayer. The Charter Chaplain was Rev. John Richardson. Red Fuller served two terms and was succeeded by Steve Williams and then John Angermayer. Steve and John later transferred to Sacred Heart Council and live in Southport. Other notable members of Our Lady of the Rosary were the Most Rev.George E.Lynch who led many demonstrations in support of Right to Life issues and The Honorable Michael Easley who was governor of North Carolina from 2000-2008. Of the 35 charter members, approximately 12 were from the Southport area and the rest closer to Shallotte.
Initial meetings were held at the old BEMC (Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation) building in Shallotte. Later, to accommodate members living in the Southport area, Bolivia and Boiling Spring Lakes, meetings were moved up to Brunswick Community College in a trailer occupied by the Brunswick Interagency Group headed by Anita White. FYI - The Interagency Program has been a major recipient of LAMB [Least Among My Brethren] funds from the beginning of Council #9039 and according to Anita the Knights have donated more than $60,000.
Travel again became an issue and in 1990 or 1991, since the majority of members were from St Brendan’s, which was benefiting from the growth of the North Myrtle Beach area, the Council moved from BCC to its’ permanent home at St Brendan’s in Shallotte. In 2005 their membership stood at 111.
For many years, with the exception of the LAMB program from the Shallotte Council, the Knights of Columbus had no visibility in the Southport area. This changed, however, when in June, 1997 Fr Doug Lawson became Pastor of Sacred Heart. At that time there were approximately 450 registered families.
Aware that the Knights of Columbus, the largest organization of Catholic men in the world, plays a leading role in service to the Parish, Pastor and Community and knowing that someday he would need a new deck on his retirement home he was anxious to start a Council. But he delayed his request to the Knights because his older Brother, Fr Bob Lawson aware that he was to become the NC KC State Chaplain asked Fr Doug to wait so that he could be instrumental in starting the council. Like the good younger brother that he was he agreed.
On a weekend, early in the summer of 1999, possibly July, State Chaplain, Fr Bob Lawson, brought his team to Sacred Heart hoping to find the 30 men needed to start a new council. He spoke eloquently about the Knights at all the masses and urged all the men interested in joining to come to a meeting that Sunday evening. His team consisted of State Deputy, Bob Springer, State Treasurer, Dave Onofrio, Insurance Field Agent, Jim Crowe, DD, Tony Santino and one or two others
.
The team went through their presentation and informed the parish what was involved in starting a council. An estimated 40 to 50 men came to the meeting. Some were Knights members of other councils, like Shallotte, but most were not. There was no doubt that there were enough interested men [30 men are required] to start the council.
What came, as somewhat of a surprise was that, pending receipt of the charter, volunteers were needed to act as the interim Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight and Financial Secretary. Don Meyer volunteered although to this day he swears that he was sitting on his hands, which somehow miraculously his hand shot into the air. Fr Doug told Don it was the Holy Spirit who raised his hand. Don was a Past Grand Knight, which made it easy for the new Council to be established and up and running quickly. Don’s Deputy Grand Knight was John Astoske and the Financial Secretary was John Maher.
On 4 August 1999 Don held his first organizational meeting at which it was decided on the new Council’s name, Sacred Heart of Southport. It was necessary to say of Southport because at the north end of rte #211, in Pinehurst, there is a Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart Council. The Pastor and Council Chaplain had been Fr. Bob Lawson. Now, at the south end of rte #211, in Southport, there is a Sacred Heart Church and a Sacred Heart Council where the Pastor and Council Chaplain was Fr. Doug Lawson
On 8 August 1999, in the old Church’s Social Hall, 24 candidates took their First Degree. It was at that time the largest First Degree the St Mary’s team ever exemplified. At the organization meeting it was felt that there would be an estimated 52 plus charter members; the 24 new Knights and others transferring their membership from Shallotte and other councils. The estimate was not off by much because on 25 August 25 Sacred Heart received its Charter with 63 charter members.
Don Meyer was elected the Charter Grand Knight. The other officers were: DGK John Astoske; Chancellor Jack O’Neil; Warden John Long; Advocate Bob Kleid; Recorder Richard Hunt; Treasurer Bill Malvey; Inside Guard Calvin Hicks; Outside Guard; Paul Toland; Trustees Henry Hall, Paul Latzy and Duane Stuker; Chaplain Fr Doug Lawson; and Financial Secretary John Maher.
The Program Directors were: Membership Bob DiCianni; Lecturer John Reiners; Church Gene Martin; Council John Sullivan; Community Angelo Gibilaro; Family Tom Gniazdowski; Youth Jerry Pierce.
What Don is most proud of is the starting of weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament back in June of 2000. To this day he is still involved with the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Council Year July 2000-June 2001
John Astoske, who would have succeeded Don Meyer as Grand Knight had his hands full with his Ice Cream Parlor and choose not to run. Don was re-elected for a second term and the Council assumed future Grand Knights would do the same. Jack O’Neil was scheduled to follow Don as Grand Knight in two years starting in 2003 John Long would take over. Well it didn’t happen that way.
Council Year July 2002-June 2003
Jack O’Neil moved to Florida and John Long, who had only become a Catholic in 1997 or 98 became Grand Knight in 2001. Paul Toland was to take over in 2003 and in 2001 I didn’t know what a Bodinski was. Unfortunately Paul’s passing accelerated another jump in the chairs and Steve, after John Long and I assured him there was nothing to it and not to worry because we would always be there for him, agreed to become the Council’s third Grand Knight. After all these assurances, at Steve’s first meeting as Grand Knight, John Long and Don Meyer were both away.
Council Year 1 July 2003-30 June 2004
The Grand Knight was Steve Bodinsky. The other officers were: Deputy GK Paul Robinson; Financial Secretary Dick Sturdevant; Chancellor Dan Cundiff; Recorder Joe Kinzer; Treasurer Bill Malvey; Advocate Bob Kleid; Warden Bill Jankowsk; Inside Guard Pete Camilleri; O/S Guard Joe Hasson; Trustee (1yr) Don Meyer; Trustee (2 yrs) John Sullivan; Trustee (3 yrs) John Long; Chaplain Fr. Doug Lawson; Lecturer Marty Kane; Membership SK Don Meyer; LAMB SK Angelo Gibilaro; Newsletter Editor: Frank Rafalko.
The Service Program Committee Directors and Chairmen were: Church: Ted Washienko; Council: John Sullivan; Community: Jon Roethke; Family: Dan Cundiff; Youth: Rob Martin; Vocation: Gene Martin; Public Relations: Dan Cundiff;
Health Service: Michael Curtin;
In his own words, Grand Knight Steve Bedinsky had this to say about Sacred Council's accomplishments during his term in office:
"It has been a very rewarding experience for me to serve as Grand Knight of the Council. Serving in this capacity has afforded me the opportunity to be associated with some of the finest individuals that I might otherwise never have met.
We have accomplished much over the past year. We will receive the coveted Star Council Award for the fifth year in a row. At the State Convention in May, we received the LAMB Award, the Distinguished Council Award and the Council Recognition Program Church Award. This last award was given to our Council for the preparation and for our participation in the New Church Dedication. These are your awards. You men worked hard, not for awards, but for your Council."
It was also another great year for the Council's second annual Wives Knight Out with 96 Knights and Wives in attendance Thanks to the Kitchen Team of Terri Spencer, Paul Robinson, Bill Jankowski, Rob Martin, Paul Woodyard, Kevin Gillooly, Ted Washienko, Bob Comstock and Dick Sturdevant, the event went off without a hitch, well almost anyway, Rob Martin became the Roto-Rooter expert, not in his job description.
Paul Robinson & Steve Bodinsky, unpacked and set-up the new round tables purchased through the Knights at a cost of $2800. Sue Cundiff’s comment was “Now you guys are officially “Knights of the Round Tables.” John Long and Paul Robinson kept the Stream of Refreshments flowing at a manageable pace.
Grand Knight, Steve Bodinsky Hosted the dinner with a Welcome to the Guests and a Toast to The Wives, Father Doug gave the blessing and Willie Gore talked with us about Brunswick County and its Educational Opportunities & Challenges.
