WOUNDED WARRIOR PROGRAM RESULTS

  Monday, January 16 2012 @ 09:46 AM CST

General NewsThe Knights of Columbus response to the Wounded Warrior Program, to send the Wounded Warriors home for Christmas, totaled $81,291.16 This is an all-time record for the Knights assistance with this extremely important program. This could not have happened in a better year as the total funds raised for this program fell short, due to the economy situation. Some of our normal large contributors were the Real Estate Assn. and the Home Builders Assn. They both suffered a terrible business year, very few homes sold and fewer built. The KofC help made it possible for the Military Order of the Purple Heart to send 399 Wounded Warriors home for Christmas this year. I had the opportunity to meet some 35 Wounded Warriors at a Fund Raiser in New Bern, N.C. These Warriors volunteered to be present to thank donors for their generosity. The Knights of Columbus was pointed out as the Largest Contributor to this Program.

Brother Knights, I cannot tell you, in words, what your response to this program has meant to me. I have never been so proud to be a Knight and a Brother to all of you. Here’s hoping with the withdrawal from Iraq, our causalities will not be so high in 2012, but we still have Afghanistan, which seems to be even a greater danger to our Military Men & Women. Again Thanks for all your help. Keep these Wounded Warriors in your prayers.

Lee grew up in the Washington, DC area and graduated from George Mason University. He and his wife Caroline have two children. Lee retired from the Central Intelligence Agency serving in various locations around the world. Caroline is also retired from the Central Intelligence Agency.

In July of 2008, Lee and Caroline migrated south to Winding River Plantation where they built a lovely home. Dave joined Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus in October, 2009 and rapidly completed all his 2nd and 3rd degrees in April, 2011. Lee currently serves as the Council's LAMB Director and as one of my partners in the 2011 Knights' Charity Golf Tournament.

This award recognizes Lee's outstanding leadership in conducting the financially successful 2011 LAMB campaign. The position of LAMB Director is one of the most taxing positions the council has coordinating three locations over eight dates and constantly searching for volunteers.

Lee's leadership and participation in this Council is a fine example of a new Brother stepping up and contributing to the success of what we do as Catholic men for our community.

We have 10 knights in regalia signed up and 4 Knights who will wear Tuxedoes. (We still must decide upon autos for those who will attend, but will not be able to walk the parade route.)

Christmas Dinner at Duffers: The dinner will follow the parade. We will meet at Duffers (Oak Isalnd) between 5 and 5:30 PM. The menu was mailed out. Cost is $25 per person including tax and tip. Any Sir Knight can go to the dinner even if you do not participate in the parade.

Color Corps: Faithful Commander SK Bill Jankowski thanked all Sir Knights in regalia who took part in Bob KLEID’S viewing and all Sir Knights in tuxedoes who ushered and participated in the funeral Mass. There were 10 Sir Knights that stood guard at the casket at the 2PM to 4PM viewing and 5 Knights at the 6PM to 8PM viewing. There were about 12 Sir Knights in tuxedoes at the funeral Mass. Bob’s daughter thanked Bill both at the viewing and after the Mass for our participation. Bill also thanked the Color Guard members who participated in the Veterans’ Day Mass on Sunday.

The following new business was presented:

FN SK Richard Kunzier mentioned an outing early next year. It was suggested a trip to the Battleship NC would be an option. A communion breakfast with wives was also suggested.

FN SK Richard Kunzier presented awards to our two new Fourth Degree members SK James Barkowski and SK Ed McCarron.

Richard also talked about a letter from the Vice Supreme Master concerning scholarships for seminarians who would give 3 to 5 years to the military as military chaplains. North Carolina has been asked to donate $4000 per year for 5 years to this fund. Approximately $1500 was collected at the Exemplification Mass, so the state needs $2500 more for this year. This fund is expected to pay for 50% of the education cost of the seminarians. Our three Trustees will decide how much our Assembly will donate.

SK Joe Kinzer displayed a plaque given at our Assembly at the Wounded Warrior’s cookout at Fort Bragg. The plaque expressed their appreciation for what we do for the soldiers. It was signed by Lieutenant Colonel James Shoemaker.

FN SK Richard Kunzier updated our Assembly on the suggestion of giving donations for families of Wounded Warriors to enable them to visit servicemen at Fort Bragg or Camp Lejeune. Donation to the Order of the Purple Heart would help the families at Camp Lejeune. Joe Kinser will check with Fort Bragg. At the moment, there is no Assembly decision on these donations.

It was decided that our December Meeting will be the dinner at Duffers after the Oak Island Paraded on December 3.

Good of the Order: Ray Wycoff is improving from his surgery. Jim Harrington had a medication problem that has been resolved and he is improving. Frank Callis had gall stones removed but during the process his gout medication was not given to him. He had some swelling in his arms and legs but that is improving. Keep our Brothers in you prayers.

The closing ceremony was held

The closing prayer was said by: Rev Douglas Lawson

The closing Ode was sung by all.
